Clyde Butcher: Florida’s Photographer

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Powerful and haunting photographs of Florida landscapes will fill the galleries at Foosaner Art Museum starting June 8 with the opening of Clyde Butcher: Florida’s Photographer.

The show, featuring 69 Butcher photos from the museum’s permanent collection, will remain up until Oct. 19. The images are from his Limited Edition Collection, which had Butcher (b. 1941) and his large-format cameras capturing Florida’s forests, swamps and estuaries from the St. Johns River to the Keys between 1986 and 1995.

Butcher worked in the darkroom to print a limited edition of only three copies of each image; one for his gallery, one for the Foosaner Art Museum, and one for sale.

Foosaner Art Museum has this rare collection on exhibit from June 8 – October 19. The images are only available for viewing at this exhibit, as they are not to be found in any of Butcher’s books or on his website.

Butcher’s black-and-white photographs enable him to express the details and textures that distinguish the Florida landscape. He said his hope is that by highlighting the Sunshine State’s natural beauty, undeveloped areas of the state will be preserved.

Join witht the Camera Club of Brevard for a morning workshop learning how to Make a Great Photo presented by Chuck Palmer.  This is open to the public at the Eau Gallie Public Library starting at 9:15am.  Grab some lunch then on to the Foosaner!

About Us

The heart of an art museum is its permanent collection. Since opening in 1978 the Foosaner Art Museum (originally the Brevard Art Center and Museum) has amassed nearly 5,000 objects, spanning 2,000 years of creative history. The Foosaner Art Museum’s permanent collection includes works by 20th-century Central Florida artists, Asian ceramics and metalwork, Modern and Contemporary works on paper; specific strengths include the photographs of Florida artist and environmentalist, Clyde Butcher (b. 1942); the Conill Mendoza Collection of American Industrial Design; and the world’s largest collection of art the German Impressionist, Ernst Oppler (1897 – 1929).

The creative center of the Foosaner is our Renee Foosaner Education Center, an active studio for fine arts courses of all media. Throughout the year, the Foosaner offers a changing selection of exhibitions and educational programming for children and adults. Our rotating schedule of exhibitions highlights nationally and internationally recognized artists and historical art movements, including a variety of exhibitions created from the permanent collection and changing exhibitions of contemporary Florida artists in the Renee Foosaner Education Center’s Frits Van Eeden Gallery.
